SINCE YESTERDAY: The Untold Story of Scotland's Girl Bands (15) plus Q&A

We are delighted to welcome Saskia Holling of Sally Skull and director Blair Young for a post film discussion.

The McKinleys, The Ettes, Strawberry Switchblade, Sophisticated Boom Boom, Twinsets, His Latest Flame, Sunset Gun, Lungleg, Pink Kross, Sally Skull, Hello Skinny and The Hedrons. Ignored by the industry and deprived of the global success afforded to the male-dominated bands of the day, Since Yesterday: The Untold Story of Scotland’s Girl Bands is a celebration of the women and the music of yesteryear, and a rallying cry to the female talent of tomorrow. Blending personal anecdotes with a scrapbook-style audio-visual aesthetic, Since Yesterday takes us on a decade-by-decade adventure, crafting the ultimate visual mixtape.

The film takes a critical look at the barriers women have faced making music in the past, and still face today. It asks how we can inspire young women to make music, if those who do so are continuously erased from our cultural history. Written & narrated by award-nominated musician Carla J. Easton, this is a powerful global story told through a local lens.

On Resistance Street (N/C 15+)

ON RESISTANCE STREET is a feature length documentary examining the role music plays in the fight against Fascism, racism and bigotry. The film was shot over a two year period in England, Belfast and New York and features contributions from many renowned musicians, bands, writers and commentators. These include original members of STEEL PULSE, THE SEX PISTOLS, ASWAD, STIFF LITTLE FINGERS, THE LEVELLERS, THE MEN THEY COULDN’T HANG, and others.

ON RESISTANCE STREET looks at the impact the 1970s ‘Rock Against Racism’ movement had on a whole generation of young people and the radical bands, solo artists and political activists who were inspired by it.

The film also explores the almost forgotten formation of ‘The Stars Campaign for Inter-racial Friendship’ by a group of famous British Jazz musicians and pop artists, in the wake of the 1958 Notting Hill riots. ORS tells the story of the organisation for the first time via film.

In addition, ORS charts the 21st century political drift to the Right in the contemporary West and dissects the influence of Far Right extremist groups and individuals on Donald Trump’s ascension in America, Brexit and the recent Conservative government in Britain.

Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus (U) Monday Night Film Club

On March 28th, 2023, legendary composer Ryuichi Sakamoto passed away after his struggle against cancer. In the years leading up to his death, Sakamoto could no longer perform live. Single concerts, not to mention sprawling global tours, were too taxing. Despite this, in late 2022, Sakamoto mustered all of his energy to leave the world with one final performance: a concert film, featuring just him and his piano.

Curated by Sakamoto himself and presented in his chosen order, the twenty pieces performed in the film wordlessly narrate his life through his music. The selection spans his entire career, from his popstar Yellow Magic Orchestra period, to his magnificent Bertolucci film scores, to music from his meditative final album, 12.

Intimately filmed in a space he knew well, surrounded by his most trusted collaborators and directed by his son, Sakamoto bares his soul through his music, knowing this may be the last time that he can present his art.

EVENT CINEMA - AngelHeaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan and T.Rex plus director Q&A (12A)

Special Nationwide Preview Event Q&A In Cinemas for One Night Only 14 September. On General Release from 22 September.

AngelHeaded Hipster is the first documentary to explore the creation and interpretation of the Music and Lyrics of Marc Bolan who died at the age of 29 in 1977. Using archival performances, interviews with Bolan, and filmed interpretations by artists such as Nick Cave, John Cameron Mitchell, Joan Jett, Macy Gray, U2, Lucinda Williams, Father John Misty, & others, this documentary creates an exuberant and thoughtful celebration of a true original; Glam Rock pioneer, gender-bending free spirit and explorer of punk and soul music with his last partner musician Gloria Jones, who is interviewed extensively from Sierra Leone. Illuminated with interviews by his great friend David Bowie, Ringo Starr, Elton John and many more, this film creates a new kind of music lookback intertwined with cinema verité footage captured directly from the studio with legendary Avant-Garde Record Producer Hal Willner who tragically died of COVID in 2020 after completing what would be his final album.
