Film Of The Week - RRR
The RBCFT film of the week is RRR.
RRR is a Telugu language action drama in which two male revolutionaries fight back against British colonialists in the 1920s. The film was released in March 2022 and broke the record for the highest opening-day collection earned by an Indian film. The film has grossed over ₹1,150 crore (US$150 million) worldwide, setting several box office records for an Indian film.
The film pairs two of the country’s biggest stars, N.T. Rama Rao Jr. (known as “Jr. NTR”) and Ram Charan, as friends from either side of a bloody colonial divide. Jr. NTR plays Bheem, a warrior from the Gond tribe, while Charan is Ram, a fearsome police officer who is underestimated by his white superiors. (The characters are inspired by two rebel heroes from the era, Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju.) Alison Doody and Ray Stevenson play the villainous British colonialist husband and wife team.
RRR has everything you require, elaborate stunts, insane action sequences, and of course, hugely rewarding dance / music sequences. At one point a tiger and a wolf collide mid-air during a brawl with one of the film’s heroes; there’s a Trojan horse filled with jungle cats and assorted wild animals; the heroes pull entire concrete blocks out of place without breaking sweat and manhandle a motorcycle like it was a child’s tricycle. You will have that sense of ‘wow’ multiple times during RRR with its clever use of high-definition slow-motion scenes. And the filmmakers are keen for you to know that no animals were harmed in the making of the film as they were all created, very cleverly, with CGI.
RRR is on Netflix and a great way to spend 3 hours of your time. It’s not a family friendly film by any means – it’s rated 15 for ‘strong bloody violence’ among other things - but it’s one of the most entertaining epics you’ll ever see.
