Directed by visionary William Freidkin (who died in August aged 87) The Exorcist was released on Boxing Day in 1973 and became a huge cultural phenomenon, it became Warner Bros' most succesful film, running for two years in American cinemas. The Exorcist became the first horror film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Such was the shock of watching the graphic scenes, some viewers suffered adverse physical reactions, fainting or vomiting.
