Sand City (Balur Nogorite) (15)

Emma and Hasan don’t know each other, but they have much in common. Most importantly, they are both sand thieves. Emma steals it for kitty litter, Hasan for making homemade glass. One day, their lives are disrupted by the discovery of a severed finger, and they learn that the human psyche can shatter as easily as glass… William Blake saw the entire world in a grain of sand, infinity in the palm of the hand, and eternity in an hour. In Bengali with English subtitles

In his debut film, Bangladeshi director Mahde Hasan plucks Blake’s words from the page and blows them across Dhaka until they stick to his protagonists. It is an oppressive portrait of a city full of sand, blended with a stylistically refined elegy about the flow of time, personal privacy, destruction, and the tear-filled valleys of our inner worlds.

This evening's event will relate to Karl’s writing on friendship as this is covered in many of his stories, not just the sci-fi ones. Karl: "the best romances are ones where the leads are also obviously great friends, in turn with each other, challenging each other, pushing each other."

Karl chose 'Before Sunrise' for screening alongside his talk the first film in Richard Linklater’s Before Trilogy. In Before Sunrise Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Céline (Julie Delpy) meet on a Euro rail train and disembark in Vienna to spend the night together.

EVENT CINEMA | The Royal Ballet GISELLE (Encore)

The peasant girl Giselle has fallen in love with Albrecht. When she discovers that he is actually a nobleman promised to another, she kills herself in despair. Her spirit joins the Wilis: the vengeful ghosts of women hell-bent on killing any man who crosses their path in a dance to the death. Wracked with guilt, Albrecht visits Giselle’s grave, where he must face the Wilis – and Giselle’s ghost.

Peter Wright’s 1985 production of this quintessential Romantic ballet is a classic of The Royal Ballet repertory. Set to Adolphe Adam’s evocative score and with atmospheric designs by John Macfarlane, Giselle conjures up the earthly and otherworldly realms in a tale of love, betrayal and redemption.

Károly Makk's beloved film, based on the autobiographical writings of Tibor Déry, is a meditation on time, memory, love and loss. EVENT CINEMA Radiohead x Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (PG)

Silents Synced pairs classic silent movies with epic rock music to bring audiences a unique big screen experience. This reimagining of the iconic Nosferatu (1922) features Radiohead’s Kid A (2000) and Amnesiac (2001) albums.

An unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Nosferatu (1922) is the quintessential silent vampire film, crafted by legendary German director F. W. Murnau. Rather than depicting Dracula as a shape-shifting monster or debonair gentleman, Murnau’s Graf Orlok (as portrayed by Max Schreck) is a nightmarish, spidery creature of bulbous head and taloned claws — perhaps the most genuinely disturbing incarnation of vampirism yet envisioned.

Don’t miss out on the chance to experience this imaginative new take on an iconic horror classic! The feature will include a 2 minute intro from Josh Frank, creator of Silent Synced.
